Robert Downey, Jr. is in negotiations to play British detective Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie's big screen imagining of the character.
Downey was attracted to the film by his wife Susan, an executive VP at Silver Pictures, the production company of Joel Silver, who is producing the film. Apparently, the Missus showed Downey, Jr. what Ritchie was going to do with the character, thus piquing his interest.
The film is scheduled to start shooting in the fall for Warner Bros. It will position the super-sleuth as a more adventurous, less buttoned up character. An October 2009 release is being eyed.
